This is by no means a completely history of the band, its line-up changes and other studio & live musicians, but it is presented here as a general overview of what happened to Level 42 over the last 20+ years. Level 42 1979-1987 ("Original 4") Mark King Bass/Vocals Mike Lindup Keyboards/Vocals Boon Gould Guitars/Sax Phil Gould Drums NOTE: Leroy Williams played percussion. In '84 Krys Mach joined on Sax and in '85 Annie McCaig on backing vocals. Level 42 1988-1989 (Staring At The Sun) Mark King Bass/Vocals Mike Lindup Keyboards/Vocals Gary Husband Drums Alan Murphy Guitars NOTE: In late '87 after the Madonna tour Boon Gould left and Paul Gendler played guitar during Level 42's 6 week headlining tour and as the opening act for Tina Turner. In Dec '87 Phil Gould had left as well and Neil Conti played drums for the rest of the tour. In '88 Gary Husband and Alan Murphy joined Level 42. Level 42 1990 Mark King Bass/Vocals Mike Lindup Keyboards/Vocals Gary Husband Drums NOTE: Alan Murphy died in Oct '89. Level 42 had made plans to play a record breaking series of shows at the Hammersmith Odeon, which they did in Dec '90 with Allan Holdsworth on guitar (along with Lyndon Connah & Annie McCaig on backing vocals). Level 42 1991-1992 (Guaranteed) Mark King Bass/Vocals Mike Lindup Keyboards/Vocals Gary Husband Drums Jakko Jakszyk Guitars NOTE: The recording sessions for the Guaranteed album featured Allan Holdsworth (confirmed guitar on Seven Years and A Kinder Eye) and Jakko Jakszyk (guitar on At This Great Distance and As Years Go By). After that Jakko toured with the band. The linernotes of the Guaranteed CD were not particularly detailed on "who played what on what song". Level 42 1994 (Forever Now) Mark King Bass/Vocals Mike Lindup Keyboards/Vocals NOTE: Phil Gould played drums during the Forever Now sessions. On tour Gavin Harrison played drums. According to Jakko, Phil did one gig or promo performance in Turkey with the Forever Now line-up of Level 42. The guitar player on the Forever Now sessions was Dominic Miller. Mark King - 1999 (One Man tour) Mark King Bass/Vocals Lyndon Connah Keyboards/Vocals Trevor Smith Drums Nathan King Guitars/Vocals NOTE: In '98, Mark King released his album "One Man" and the single "Bitter Moon". The "One Man tour" comprised of 7 dates in Jan/Feb '99. Grupo Mark King - 1999-2000 Mark King Bass/Vocals Lyndon Connah Keyboards/Vocals Gary Husband Drums Nathan King Guitars/Vocals NOTE: Mark released "Trash", a collection of demos, and following its succes started rehearsals with old pals Gary Husband and Jakko Jakszyk in the band. This line-up toured with Jakko Jakszyk on guitar at the Jazz Cafe dates in Nov '99 and in 2000 (without Jakko). Level 42 - 2001 to 2006 Mark King Bass/Vocals Lyndon Connah Keyboards/Vocals Gary Husband Drums Nathan King Guitars/Vocals Sean Freeman Sax NOTE: In late 2001, Grupo Mark King toured again, this time with sax player Sean Freeman. Mark secured the rights to the name "Level 42" and released the Reading show as "Level 42 Live at Reading".
